The Candidate Evaluation team's mission is to help employers effectively evaluate candidates’ qualifications and provide reasoning. To achieve this, we invest heavily in improving the quality of the candidate evaluation models and its surrounding infrastructure. We leverage all the rich data that Indeed has, and even drive collection of necessary data to build better models. We also work on making the model’s decision transparent to the employer by explaining it in a human-understandable way. We work closely with teams in Tokyo, Seattle, Hyderabad, and Austin to deliver this value to the actual employers who use Indeed’s service.

The base salary range below represents the low and high end of the Indeed salary range for this position. Actual salaries will vary and may be above or below the range based on various factors including but not limited to location, experience, and performance. The range listed is just one component of Indeed's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include quarterly bonuses, Long Term Incentives, an open Paid Time Off policy, and many region-specific benefits. 

Tokyo Base Salary Range: 13,100,000 - 15,720,000 JPY per year

Your job.

As a member of the Candidate Evaluation team, you will lead the effort of improving our candidate evaluation system. Employers spend their limited time reviewing and evaluating their candidates. By fully utilizing your expertise in Data Science, you will solve the problem of automating this candidate evaluation and help employers find better match candidates more efficiently. You will build and improve models and their surrounding system. The automated evaluation will be personalized, robust, extensible and explainable. You will accelerate this innovation with your technical, product, and people leadership.

As a Data Scientist, you would:

  • Lead the effort of improving our machine learning models, including making changes in their surrounding production systems, such as data pipeline built upon distributed systems and backend API for user-facing applications

  • Conceptualize, analyze, design, build, test, and keep improving models that use diverse datasets and advanced methodologies, with operational best practices / maintenance cost in mind

  • Participate in code and design reviews to maintain our high development standards

  • Communicate concisely and persuasively with engineers, product managers, and other data scientists regarding technical ideas, successes, and failures

  • Research and investigate cutting edge data science technologies, and incrementally validate its impact to the product

About you.

We are looking for someone who is passionate about data and coding, loves intellectual challenges, is eager to learn, has a product mind, and wants to work with a variety of technologies to solve interesting problems.


  • Strong sense of ownership as a technical, product, and people leader

  • Strong desire to solve tough problems with quality software at scale

  • Degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Machine Learning, or a closely related field

  • 3+ years of professional industry experience in data science / machine learning / analytics

  • Production development of data science solutions using Python, R, Scala, Java, Kotlin, or C++

  • Solid knowledge of programming, including data structures and algorithms

  • An understanding of the value derived from shipping code/models rapidly to production and learning/iterating on the results
