The base salary range below represents the low and high end of the Indeed salary range for this position. Actual salaries will vary and may be above or below the range based on various factors including but not limited to location, experience, and performance. The range listed is just one component of Indeed's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include quarterly bonuses, Long Term Incentive Plan units, an open Paid Time Off policy, and many region-specific benefits.

Austin Area Base Salary Range: 199,000-261,000 USD per year

Indeed’s Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) organization spans the globe, with 60+ SREs in Austin, Seattle, San Francisco, Tokyo, Hyderabad, and Dublin. We are a rapidly growing and highly impactful engineering team applying software engineering techniques to production operations in order to maximize engineering velocity while guiding product teams to meet reliability goals.

Every month, over 250 million people visit Indeed in 60+ countries to help them find jobs, publish their resumes, and process their job applications. These people count on Indeed SRE to ensure Indeed’s products are available, fast, and working correctly to ultimately get hired. SREs at Indeed are embedded directly with our product teams, working closely with them to design, code, test, run, and evolve the systems that help people around the world get jobs. We work closely with dozens of Indeed teams to drive adoption of modern reliability practices like SLOs, error budget policies, actionable alerts, follow-the-sun on-call, incident retrospectives, chaos testing, and end-to-end ownership.

As Head of SMB SRE, you’ll lead the SRE function for Indeed’s SMB organization, which is one of Indeed’s five core business groups. This group’s products are used by millions of Small and Mid-Sized companies globally receiving 10s of millions of job applications per month all around the world. Globally, people count on our SMB teams to ensure Indeed’s employer products are available, fast, and working correctly to ultimately get people hired! You’ll work closely with engineering and product leadership to maximize development velocity while ensuring the products meet their high standards for reliability and performance. You’ll also collaborate with SRE leaders in other parts of the business to share knowledge, align engineering efforts, and evolve Indeed’s SRE culture.

SREs are crucial contributors to nearly every Indeed product team that has big traffic, big data, or high availability and performance requirements.   • Own availability and performance for some of Indeed’s most critical products

  • Foster an environment of continuous learning that builds excellent engineering skill sets

  • Guide multiple teams to design, develop, write, and ship software and systems to increase reliability and operational excellence

  • Work closely with other leaders across teams and cities to improve alignment, communication, and collaboration between SRE and other functions

  • Help engineers and managers develop their careers through personalized coaching and performance management

  • Grow the SMB SRE org by hiring the best engineers and developing new leaders

  • Occasionally travel to work with team members in other cities

About you.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience leading site reliability or software engineering teams with a consistent record of high-quality, iterative delivery for large, cross-functional projects

  • Solid knowledge of data structures and algorithms and excellent programming skills

  • Ability to motivate and guide a team to achieve important goals together

  • Desire to improve reliability, performance, scalability, and operations using software engineering techniques at scale

  • Strong ability to coach software and systems engineers, helping them improve their skills and grow their careers

  • Significant experience building systems in Java, Go, Python, or a similar language.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Expertise in public cloud technologies and public cloud migration

  • Deep understanding of web technologies

  • Strong knowledge of databases, both SQL and NoSQL

  • Experience with service-oriented and event-driven system architectures

  • Experience building high-performance distributed systems

  • Understanding of the value derived from shipping code rapidly to production and learning/iterating on the results

  • Experience designing, writing, and/or troubleshooting software and systems in a distributed, internet-scale Linux environment.

  • Experience recruiting and hiring software and/or site reliability engineers.
