The base salary range below represents the low and high end of the Indeed salary range for this position. Actual salaries will vary and may be above or below the range based on various factors including but not limited to location, experience, and performance. The range listed is just one component of Indeed's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include quarterly bonuses, Long Term Incentive Plan units, an open Paid Time Off policy, and many region-specific benefits. 

Austin Base Salary Range: 118,000 - 164,000 USD per year

Your job.

The Director of Taxonomy is responsible for driving the strategy and construction of a common hierarchy and metadata that enables matching employers and jobseekers worldwide. To achieve this, the director will oversee a team of 50+ taxonomists who develop controlled vocabularies and apply metadata in order to significantly improve the job search experience for millions of Indeed users.

As an ideal candidate, you’ve been described as dynamic, creative, forward-thinking, and organized. You have a detailed understanding of taxonomy design best practices and experience implementing large-scale taxonomy and/or ontology projects with a user-centered focus. You are comfortable working in a fast paced environment where you will partner closely with data scientists, product managers, and engineers to solve common problems. You’re an excellent communicator equally comfortable developing and supporting your direct reports. You’re comfortable giving and receiving feedback, don’t shy away from tough conversations when the need arises, and revel in celebrating team and individual successes. You can explain complicated concepts in a straightforward, easy to understand manner and enjoy working closely with cross-functional colleagues and stakeholders.

At Indeed, you will play a direct role in shaping the job search experience and in helping to define the long-term strategy for a rapidly developing, international team.


  • Drive adoption of taxonomy and information architecture standards across Indeed’s jobseeker and employer experiences

  • Lead a world class team of taxonomist: hire the best talent, standardize onboarding, refine training and craft a path for professional development

  • Collaborate with the jobseeker leadership team to develop an approach that includes immediate, easy-win improvements but also leads to a transformative change in how we categorize, serve and deliver experiences to our users

  • Manage the execution of taxonomy- and ontology-focused projects, collaborating closely with data scientists, developers, and product managers

  • Establish standards, enforce quality and evangelize the value of taxonomy and its potential to unify and scale the experience across our products.

  • Identify and integrate best practices in working with human labelers and machine learning to continually improve our product experiences.

  • Research and incorporate industry best practices into Indeed’s approach to information architecture (IA) and taxonomy

  • Scope the business requirements to select or build highly usable, software-based internal tools that meet the taxonomy team’s needs

About you.

Required Qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience in a taxonomy-, ontology-, or metadata-focused role, preferably leading large-scale projects

  • Experience managing and growing a large team of taxonomists

  • Project management experience, preferably in an agile environment

  • Experience with Natural Language Processing

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English

  • Passion for supporting and helping team members to grow in their roles

  • Strong problem solving and conceptual thinking abilities

  • Desire to work in a collaborative, fast-paced environment

  • Comfort with emerging technology and the ability to learn new systems as needed

  • Ability to context switch between systems-level thinking and attention to minute details

  • Ability to balance quick decision-making with attention to quality and accuracy

  • Desire to stay up-to-date on taxonomy and user experience best practices and trends


  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science or equivalent work experience

  • Experience interviewing and hiring candidates

  • Knowledge of SQL or SPARQL

  • Able to read and write in a language other than English

  • Experience working closely with data scientists on cross-functional projects

  • Extensive experience recruiting, screening, interviewing and onboarding new team members candidates
