The base salary range below represents the low and high end of the Indeed salary range for this position. Actual salaries will vary and may be above or below the range based on various factors including but not limited to location, experience, and performance. The range listed is just one component of Indeed's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards include quarterly bonuses, Long Term Incentive Plan units, an open Paid Time Off policy, and many region-specific benefits.

The SMB Business unit is a group of engineers, designers, data scientists and product managers based in four technology development offices around the world who are responsible for the products used by millions of Small and Mid-Sized companies globally. We support hundreds of thousands of employers posting jobs with 10s of millions of applies per month all around the world. Our product is used by over 90% of the employers that engage with Indeed and is the growth engine of the company's current and future revenue stream.


We provide the platform for posting jobs and getting these jobs in front of the right job seekers either through search or by actively inviting them to apply, innovative AI models to improve mutual visibility and engagement, and streamlined communication and workflow. We are a leading business group at Indeed that delivers a significant impact on Indeed's bottom-line. Our work integrates with many teams across Indeed and requires highly technical, innovative, flexible thinkers with excellent communication and passion for delivering the best experience to help people get jobs.


This role is one of a kind within Indeed and is a senior individual contributor, reporting directly to the Head of Engineering for SMB. In addition to bringing unparalleled technical insight and know-how, your most important function is to inspire teams to creatively engage and solve some of SMB's most complex and future-thinking issues across our tech stack. This person will not replace any in-product or platform architects; rather, they will amplify them by driving initiatives that don't necessarily fit nicely into one place but are nevertheless critical to our success.


Responsibilities


  • Works with the senior leadership team to shape the go-forward vision for the organization from a high-level tech perspective.

  • Participates in and influences the development of technology roadmaps across the company

  • Acts as a point of escalation for teams facing extremely complex challenges; in doing so, you will work cross-functionally to connect teams facing similar challenges and problems to encourage consistency. 

  • Works with recruiting to attract, retain, and develop top talent. 

  • Drives thought leadership and innovation within the organization, as well as evaluate new technologies for adoption. 

  • Teaches, mentors, grows and advises other domain experts in the organization (including dotted-line direct reports)

  • Documents, reviews, and ensures that all quality and change standards are met using demonstrated best practices.

  • Successfully articulates the value creation and business proposition to teams and functional partners

  • Participates in and leads review sessions to drive consistency across the enterprise.


About you.

SMB is made up of more than 30 teams with more than 150 code committers. We optimize for autonomy at the team level, and our teams are laser-focused on delivering value to our customers in the product or features that they own. As a Distinguished Engineer for SMB, you will be responsible for identifying strategic goals, leading solutions, and delivering systems and enhancements in our service-oriented, highly scalable, multi-datacenter environment. You will work across this broad group of teams, provide feedback and guidance on projects led by individual organizations and help ensure we are building the capabilities we will need to continue to drive the growth of Indeed.  


Requirements

  • 15+ years of experience with large-scale software development

  • 5+ years' experience working in an individual contributor leadership role for top tech companies

  • Solid knowledge of data structures and algorithms and excellent programming skills

  • Experience influencing a geographically distributed software engineering organization comprising multiple teams

  • Strong understanding of databases, both SQL and NoSQL

  • Experience with service-oriented and event-driven system architectures

  • Experience building high-performance distributed systems


Preferred Qualifications
  • Masters in computer science or other technical fields
  • Professionally recognized by peers and leaders in the organization for significant expertise within a specific domain
  • Active participation in or leadership of professional groups affiliated within your given area of technical expertise
  • Experience effectively building formal and informal relationship networks inside and outside the organization
  • Deep experience evaluating new talent as it relates to business needs
